A Mystic local tour…by a local

Many locals in this part of Southeastern Connecticut trace their roots to something with a maritime flavor. Mystic was a whaling and shipbuilding center for much of its history, and many descendants of those business owners are still in our midst.

Right down the road in New London is the US Coast Guard Academy as well as the East Coast Naval Submarine base where virtually all officer and enlisted training for USN submarines take place. One of the largest local employers is the Electric Boat division of General Dynamics where nuclear submarines are built right on the nearby Thames River. Designers and builders of modern pleasure craft have a long history in the region and there is a vibrant sailing, fishing, and water sports culture throughout Fishers Island sound.

My grandfather, a career naval officer, originally discovered this area while attending submarine school in New London. Upon retiring from the Navy after WWII he settled in Mystic, and I first discovered the area visiting him as youngster. Our family spent many summers on the coast here and eventually I moved here full time and have discovered the seaside beauty of the other seasons, yes, even winter. When you join a local tour with Mystic Revealed, we’d like to think you get a chance to see, feel and taste and area through the eyes of a local. We have deep roots here and look forward to sharing our passion for the area with you.
